Ah, well pirates are very popular in books and movies! Obviously they're criminals, but the veil of history makes it easy to romanticize that sort of free-spirited lifestyle. The wide open sea is appealing and so is the idea of living how you please and taking what you want! There's lot of famous pirates like Blackbeard, and it's a popular costume, usually involving an eyepatch, a peg leg, or a hook for a hand? And a hat with a jolly roger on it. Or maybe a parrot?

I think the coolest thing is when they have a sword duel on the deck of a ship. Or following a map to buried treasure.
