Seeing how their gift affected the people, the gods decided it would be best if they only saw it for half of every month -- which became the cycles of the moon.
[Speaking of, it's nearly a new moon right now, so only the faintest sliver is visible -- no doubt allowing for the meteor shower, as the combination of the ring and the moon might have made them too faint to see.]
